Amor Arenal (Adults Only)
We recommend this place to travellers who want jungle immersion without giving up polish: Amor...
Origins Lodge is small by design: six standalone round wooden lodges built into the hillside and a single treetop villa, nothing else. Each lodge takes its circular form from pre-Columbian roundhouses, with a skylight overhead and shutters that open the room straight to the forest. The estate runs to 111 acres near Bijagua, in the shadow of Tenorio Volcano, and reaching it typically means a GPS-guided drive up an unmarked road, or a private transfer to the lodge’s own heliport and landing strip.
We liked that nothing here is generic: the architecture answers to the forest rather than a hotel template, the kitchen runs on what the estate itself grows, and sustainability is structural rather than a line in the brochure, from the B Corp certification to the 500 native trees planted every year and the 25 stingless Melipona beehives on site. It is a lodge built around a philosophy, not a checklist of amenities.
Bijagua sits in the shadow of Tenorio Volcano, in the quieter northern lowlands between Arenal and the Nicaraguan border, far from the main tourist circuit. Rio Celeste, the turquoise waterfall inside Tenorio Volcano National Park, is reachable on a guided hike, and the surrounding Tapir Valley Nature Reserve and Rio Frio make this one of the better bases in the country for wildlife watching rather than volcano-view photographs alone.
Prix: €€€€
Vibe: Remote, architectural, deeply eco-minded luxury
Chambres: 7 round wooden lodges plus a treetop Three Bedroom Vertigo Lodge
Best For: Couples seeking real remoteness, design-minded travellers, small groups taking the treetop villa
Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: A wood-fired hot tub on a private terrace, with no electricity bill in sight
Dining: El Salto restaurant, produce from the estate’s own gardens and lagoons, guest chefs curated by a Michelin-starred advisor
Amenities: Canopy-level infinity pool, Laka-Tii plant-based spa suite, yoga shala, organic minibar, no air conditioning by design
Attractions: Rio Celeste waterfall, Tenorio Volcano National Park, Tapir Valley Nature Reserve, Rio Frio boat safaris
Every lodge pairs a canopy bed with an outdoor volcanic-stone shower, a private terrace and a wood-burning hot tub, plus binoculars and walkie-talkies rather than a minibar list of soft drinks. There is no air conditioning, a deliberate choice backed by solar-heated water and the natural ventilation the open shutters provide. The Three Bedroom Vertigo Lodge, suspended in the trees with its own kitchen, is the one option built for a family or small group rather than a couple.
Dinner at El Salto changes with whichever chef is in residence, each one selected under the guidance of a Michelin-starred advisor, and leans heavily on what the estate’s gardens, farm and lagoons produce that week. Rates include an organic breakfast, and the Skyview bar keeps sugar-cane cocktails and a fire pit going well into the evening. It is tasting-menu thinking applied to a lodge that, on paper, looks purely like a nature retreat.
The lodge’s natural infinity pool sits level with the forest canopy, with Tenorio Volcano and, on a clear day, Lake Nicaragua in view beyond the treeline. The Laka-Tii Spa Suite adds plant-based treatments made with garden herbs, a wooden deck hot tub, and a shala reserved for yoga, meditation and breathwork, rounding out a stay built as much around stillness as around the wildlife outside the door.
