BoHo Tamarindo - Adults Only
We loved how little BoHo Tamarindo tries to be: eight design-forward rooms and a single...
Casa Chameleon stacks its 21 villas along a cliff above Playa Danta, on the small peninsula town of Las Catalinas in Guanacaste, and gives every single one a saltwater plunge pool with a zero-edge view of the Pacific. It is a rare case where the headline amenity is not exaggerated: there is no villa here without its own pool and its own ocean horizon, which is unusual even among Costa Rica’s better boutique addresses.
We liked that the hotel builds its entire identity around one idea, repeated at scale without losing quality: a private pool, an open wall to the jungle, and a deck set up for actual use, with a daybed, a yoga mat and weights rather than decoration. The nightly gong-and-torch ceremony at sunset and the fire pits lit in the public pool after dark are the kind of ritual that turns a stay into a memory rather than just a room.
Las Catalinas is a walkable, car-free beach town built on a peninsula in Guanacaste, with Casa Chameleon perched at its highest point. The hotel is roughly an hour from Liberia’s airport, far closer than the three-to-four-hour drive from San José, which makes it a realistic choice even for a shorter trip. Rincón de la Vieja National Park, with its active volcano and waterfalls, sits about thirty minutes away for travellers who want one inland day between beach days.

Each of the 21 villas carries its own name and a boho decor rather than a repeated template, built around a king-sized canopy bed, an open-air shower and a saltwater plunge pool that steps straight off the private deck. The retractable fourth wall opens the room to the surrounding jungle on demand, and the deck itself is equipped for actual mornings, not just photographs: a daybed, a yoga mat and a set of weights sit alongside the usual lounger.
Chef Jose Lopez runs Sentido Norte through breakfast, lunch and dinner, leaning on Costa Rican staples from chia pudding and huevos rancheros to plantain-and-cashew French toast, while the sunset bar turns local produce into drinks like the Agua de Sapo, lime, ginger, guaro and brown sugar. Every evening closes with a gong ceremony and torch-lighting as the sun drops over the Pacific, a ritual guests tend to plan their whole day around rather than stumble into by accident.
Beyond the private villa pools, the resort’s public infinity-edge pool looks straight out over the Guanacaste coast and lights its in-water fire pits at sunset, with poolside cabanas and weekly yoga sessions under a 360-degree Pacific view. Guests can hike the surrounding 1,000 acres, ride a complimentary golf cart to two nearby public beaches, swim out to a floating dock, or book a canopy tour or sunset catamaran through the concierge.
